It is Friday April the 13th, and Spring season started almost a month ago. Flowers are blooming, the sun is out, and I refuse to wear my winter jacket even though it is supposed to snow over the weekend. It is Spring season but yesterday night, in my room, I felt like I was in the middle of the spookiest months of all: October.

October means two things: Halloween and Halloween candy. And since I love those two things, I did not mind ignoring the wonderful month of April for just a few hours. “How can you escape a season?” you may ask. Well let me explain: Have you ever watched a winter wonderland movie in the middle of summer? I you haven’t, you are missing out on the nostalgia that is seeing Elf whilst it is 80 degrees outside.

My discovery yesterday night was Verónica, a movie based on the 90’s in Spain. Oh Lord was it a discovery. Jump scares had never been this loud and lights had never felt less bright. Verónica is the best scary movie I have seen in a very long time. The Conjuring can only be re-watched a handful of time, before you start to like the spirits in the house more than the family itself. The fact is that Netflix doesn’t have a wide range of good horror films, so when my friend mentioned Verónica, I did not hesitate for one second: I had to watch it.

The movie is the perfect mix of a lovely family, a possession, the game of the Ouija, and nuns. So yes, there are a lot of cliché horror movie elements within the story. Regardless, it is an entertaining one. As a sun eclipse takes place, the main character and her friends contact someone who they did not mean to with the Ouija board, which will inevitably bring tragedy and horror to the characters life. The added factor is that it is based on a real case that occurred in Spain in 1992. Paco Plaza, director of the film, took the unsolved event of a teenager that mysteriously died after playing with a Ouija board and converted it into Verónica. Spooky.

So if you are a sucker for horror films, this is the next movie you should watch. Grab some candy!! Halloween this year is coming early.
