Hey everybody! Here’s what we covered in this week’s episode of “Tune Takeover”:
As you guys know, on Tune Takeover I play throwbacks and current singles by bands that have been around for a while and newer bands too. We listen and talk about just how much, or how little, the bands have changed over time and how they relate to each other. Each week I focus on a different genre of music, so this week we talked about some music in the folk-rock genre.
The first band we listened to was Mumford & Sons. They’re one of the most genuine bands I’ve ever listened to. Their rustic group harmonies and their passionate use of the banjo make them unique. I mean, who knew the banjo could sound so incredible? They love big moments, musically in general, but especially acoustically. They use their guitars and other string instruments to create their real, honest, and noble sound.
We moved on to Kings of Leon next. These guys are more rock than folk but you can hear the folk at the heart of their sound. They have gorgeous ballads and beautiful slow songs, but man, do they know how jam out. Their songs go from fun and full of life to serious and passionate in a matter of a few tracks. Some songs make you want to dance and sing and shout, then others make you want to bawl your eyes out because the lyrics cut deep. This band is so dynamic and can make so much great music, who wouldn’t love them?
After a quick commercial break, I played some music from the Lumineers. Their talented vocals and their love for the cello contribute to their amazing aged-folk sound. When I listen to their upbeat music, I feel like I’m at a barn party, watching people square dance, stomping and clapping my hands along to the music. Maybe that’s weird, but it sounds like fun to me! When I hear some of their slower melodies, I really just want to chill out and relax for a while. You know, take in their talent and the beautiful sounds they’re making, I’m all about that.
Vance Joy was the artist I chose to close out the show this week. I saw Vance live for the first time back in 2013 when he opened up for Young the Giant and he was incredible. When he sang “Georgia”, that was my first time hearing the song because he hadn’t released it yet, and I cried right there in the crowd! It was a really cool moment for me musically. He’s an artist who can make unique song that fits into the folk-rock genre while using instruments like the ukulele and the bongos. I think he’s going places!
