The Big Lebowski is a cult classic that is slowly creeping its way to become a classic for all movie lovers and even for casual fans. Upon first watch, one might not be able to fully take in all of the pure genius of the movie. The movie is filled with quotes that just can’t fully be understood by any viewer upon their first watch. I watched the movie and I laughed at certain moments, but the movie isn’t the type of movie where there is gut-busting comedy. The real genius of the movie is the movie was constantly replayed in my head after I watched it, and the more I watch the movie, the better it gets. Jeffery Lebowski (Jeff Bridges), a man who refers to himself as the dude, or a variation of the word dude, is a pure natural. Bridges just acts as natural as possible, with some lines consisting almost entirely of filler words such as um and like.
I could talk about the plot and how ridiculous it is. How a man in search of new rug to make his room look better, gets drawn into an intricate conspiracy amongst different groups and people who all try to exemplify a certain stereotype. All amongst all this chaos and frantic search for a trophy wife and a million dollars, the dude is there. The dude is the quintessential bum.
But this isn’t a movie about crime. Or a heist. Or even bowling, the dude favorite pastime. The movie transcends a normal plot. The movie is certainly seen by some as the way Mr Lebowski views the dude when he says,”What in God’s name are you taking about?” It is true, the first time I watched the movie, I didn’t entirely know what was going or why the movie was so out of reach for some viewers. “But new shit has come to light man.” The more you watch the movie, the more you understand the motives of the Dude. He doesn’t act like any other person I’ve ever met in person, and that’s why he is such a timeless character. The dude is just there, abiding. It doesn’t seem that memorable while in the movie, but afterwards the dude retorting the obnoxious bowler known as Jesus or casually being beaten up by intruders and acting cool enough to snarkily attack the intruders verbally.
See what all the fuss is about and watch this film.
