During a recent virtual press conference hosted by Universal Music Group’s 1824, artist and producer Leven Kali, pronounced (Lay-Vin Kah-Li), joined young creatives to talk about his new project, creative process, and the inspiration behind his signature blend of funk, R&B, and soul.

Born in the Netherlands and raised in California, Kali has built a reputation as a dynamic, genre-blending artist with Grammy nominations and a genuine confidence that mirrors his sound. His latest project reflects both artistic maturity and experimentation. This evolution is shaped by exploring his full vocal range, mentioning that some songs are falsetto and some are screaming. Kali writes and produces all his own music, often avoiding samples in favor of using his own voice as an instrument. His creative process is rooted in curiosity. He loves discovering who his “favorite artists’ favorite artists are.”

When asked about his experience working with the record label Def Jam, Kali emphasized the balance between independence and collaboration. Kali says how artists can reach so many people through the internet on their own — “connecting with fans, selling music” he explained. With the right time, a label partnership “amplifies the vision you have already.” He praised Def Jam for supporting his artistic direction and helping his ideas reach a wider audience.

Kali’s roots trace back to his time in a high school jazz band, where he first fell in love with creating music. When he started recording songs, it was like “a lightbulb went off,” he said. It made him feel like he was “walking on the path” of his purpose.

His advice for rising artists? Don’t chase trends. He noted that even seemingly niche passions—like a love for jazz—can resonate with an audience in today’s diverse music landscape. “Embrace the things you are truly motivated by and inspired by.”

With his upcoming project LK99, Kali dives deeper into modern funk and soul with what he describes as a more psychedelic perspective. “Inspiration is the key,” he shared. “I’d love for someone to listen to my music and do whatever creatively”, whether they’re a musician, artist, or writer.

By the end of the session, Leven Kali proved that his music isn’t just about sound—it’s about sparking creativity. As funk and soul continue to evolve, he’s standing at the forefront of the genre’s next chapter.
