James Blake is a household name in R&B and hip-hop, known primarily for his production and features on records like Frank Ocean’s Blonde, Travis Scott’s most recent record, Utopia, and his work with Beyoncè on Lemonade. Along with his production for huge artists, he also has a very successful solo career. His self-titled debut album is still beloved by die-hard fans and critics to this day, and his sophomore record Overgrown is easily his most popular. James Blake’s most notable trait is his soulful and delicate R&B vocals. The man’s vocal range is impeccable, singing both remarkable highs and devastating lows while delivering lyrics that sting on impact. James normally writes songs about heartbreak, love, and complicated relationships, but with ‘Like The End,’ he dives into unexplored territory.
As the world’s social climate continues to get more intense, so do the tensions between countries. On October 7th, 2023, the conflict between Israel and Gaza erupted, and it rages on to this very day. Countless Palestinian and Israeli lives have been lost, many families are being torn apart, and devastating damage has been done to schools, hospitals, and much, much more. It’s been hard to ignore this war and James Blake is one of many people who were inspired by it, making it the main subject of this new song, tapping into something he never has before.
‘Like The End’ begins with a melody that puts anyone at ease, sounding like it belongs in a music box. The vibes from this song are reminiscent of Radiohead, ‘No Surprises,’ specifically. James Blake discusses the feeling of restlessness coming from the war going on countries away, asking if this is something that the United Kingdom can really afford supporting knowing that the world is on the verge of an all-out war. Not only that, but they are trying to emulate the influence and operations of the United States. Blake reflects on the high stakes of politics, even the misinformation that is commonly spread about important and sensitive issues. From all of the increased noise and tension that is present in modern-day media and politics, James Blake wonders if all of this discord is just the beginning of the end. The combination of unsettling synths, James Blake’s crooning and the light percussion makes this chorus ghastly. It is like staring out at a sunset with a pit in your stomach, anxiety lurking and slowly moving to the forefront each time the chorus comes. As the song comes to an end, the droning noise and disconcerting chords set the ominous and uncertain tone of what is to come next.
James Blake has already released two records in the last year and this is his second single of 2024 on top of everything. This is easily the most chilling, but gorgeous song he has ever put out, and it serves as a great reflection of someone whose home country is going down a concerning road.
