Instant Analysis: Cincinnati “Fights to the Finish” in Thrilling Victory

Alex Frank | Sports Director

Down 24-7 at halftime, including 21-0 early in the second quarter, it looked as if the University of Cincinnati Bearcats were heading for a disappointing first loss of the season on their home turf to the Ohio University Bobcats.

As the late great Baseball Hall of Fame catcher Yogi Berra would say, though, “It ain’t over ‘til it’s over,” and the Bearcats fought to the finish and never gave into the deficit.

Cincinnati dug deep to outscore Ohio 27-6 in the second half to take a 34-30 lead with just over three minutes left in the fourth quarter.

Cincinnati, though, always has a flare for the dramatic, and Ohio drove inside the Bearcats’ five-yard line on their ensuing possession on the cusp of taking the lead.

On third-and-goal four yards out, though, sophomore safety James Wiggins stepped in front of Bobcats junior quarterback Nathan Rourke’s pass at the goal line for the game-sealing interception to put the stamp on the Bearcats’ fourth straight win to start the season.

Cincinnati will now begin the conference portion of their regular-season schedule next Saturday at the University of Connecticut at 3:30 E.T. on CBS Sports Network.
