Over Spring Break, I knew I wasn’t going to have a lot going on, so I wanted to binge watch a show on Netflix to keep me occupied for the whole week. My friend had recently started Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, and told me that I would love it. Love is an understatement. I am absolutely OBSESSED with this show, and I’m going to tell you why you’re going to be too.
First off, this show is a musical. That’s right, a musical. Now, this may be a turn-off to some people, but stay with me here. It’s not a musical in the sense that each number is a big Broadway show tune. It’s also not a musical in the sense that Glee was a musical, where all of the songs were covers. No, this show gives you completely original songs from just about every single genre. In the course of just one episode, there is a ballad about a letter, a dance club song about having people over to your house, and a Fifth Harmony-esque song about putting yourself first. Believe me, there is a song for everyone in this series.
The characters in this show are some of the most unique I have ever seen on a television show in a while. The show centers around Rebecca, a lawyer who moves from New York City to West Covina, California try to win back her ex-boyfriend, Josh. She makes new friends and ropes them all into helping her get Josh back.
The show was co-created by Rachel Bloom, who also stars as Rebecca, and she’s made this show extremely relatable. How? She based a lot of her character Rebecca’s characteristics on herself. The show is also revolutionary in its own right, with two women at the helm, one of whom is the star. The show talks about a lot of different topics that are very relatable for almost everybody, like online dating, breakups, being unsure of what you want to do with your life, Facebook stalking, relationships with your parents, and so much more. A topic that is heavily discussed in season three is mental illness: what forms that can take, and how it can affect a person. Of course, each of these topics comes with their own catchy song that you can sing to yourself if you’re ever in any of those situations.
Overall, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend is one of the best shows to come out of television in the last five years. It’s a great show with a killer soundtrack that you’ll be singing for years to come.
