Celebrating 50 Years of Musical Theatre at CCM

By Caroline Currie · On September 19, 2018

The University of Cincinnati is celebrating an outstanding anniversary this year at the College-Conservatory of Music. One of the nation’s leading conservatories”, according to The New York Times, is commemorating its Musical Theatre program in its 50th year at UC. In order to make this birthday special, CCM presented an alumni cabaret featuring Broadway and Off-Broadway artists like Pamela Myers and Faith Prince.

Pamela was the first graduate from CCM’s Musical Theatre program, 50 years ago, and made her Broadway debut as Marta in the original cast of Stephen Sondheim’s musical Company. Additionally, she was nominated as the 1971 Tony awards for Best Performance by a Featured Actress in a Musical. Faith graduated from the Musical Theatre program in 1979 and made her Broadway debut as Adelaide in Guys and Dolls, which the current Musical Theatre students will be putting on this fall. You can learn more about buying tickets for this year’s production of Guys and Dolls here. In addition to debuting on Broadway, Faith Prince actually won both the Tony and Drama Desk Awards as Best Actress in a Musical.

Many of the other alumni that performed in the Birthday Cabaret were apart of the original casts of productions like Cats, The Phantom of the Opera, and Wicked. The most recent graduate from the MT class of 2016 is about to take a national tour of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Hamilton, which won 11 Tony Awards in 2016. According to Playbill Magazine and their list of “10 Most Represented Colleges on Broadway”, CCM took the number 2 spot right behind New York University for the 2017-2018 season.

Happy 50th Birthday Musical Theatre!
