Is It Too Early For Christmas Music?

By Caroline Currie · On November 30, 2018

There are two types of people in this world, those who switch out their Halloween decorations for Christmas the day after October 31st and those who can’t believe stores are lining their aisles with Christmas decor at all. There are probably people who fit in between these two categories; however, I on the other hand, definitely fall on one side. I cannot and will not put up Christmas decorations until the day after Thanksgiving. I want to give each holiday the day they deserve before skipping over them.

Now you may be thinking, “okay she just talked about Christmas decor when the title clearly states a question regarding Christmas music…” So, where does music land when it comes to these two categories?

I decided to put the question out into social media, specifically Instagram, and the responses seemed to fit into similar categories. The exact question I posed was, “When is it too early for Christmas music?” Most of the responses fit into three categories this time instead of two, which were never, before Halloween, and before Thanksgiving. There were only 16 votes total, all being college-aged young adults, but I wasn’t shocked to find that the majority of people who replied to my question fell into the “before Thanksgiving” category because I simply just cannot imagine people listening to Christmas music before Halloween or Thanksgiving. However, that category was only the majority by 2 votes with “never” coming in second place.

This makes me draw the conclusion that much like Christmas decor, people are either really passionate about Christmas music and want to play it all year round or they just go with the seasons. Christmas music is very uplifting and spirited, so I do not completely disagree with the passionate listeners for their opinion. I am wondering though if there were more choices when it comes to other holiday music like “Thanksgiving music” or “Halloween music” maybe people wouldn’t jump over the holidays? Or if Christmas music is sentimental to most people and they find joy and memories from listening to the cozy sounding songs.

I would love to hear your opinion on this subject, so I am putting this question back out there for you to answer in the comments. When do you think it is too early for Christmas music? Should there be more music options regarding other holidays? We would love to hear from you!
