Modern Aquatic is making waves in the Cincinnati music scene. I was hooked on the band last year after I stumbled upon their Beach Monster EP on Bandcamp. Since the EP release they’ve gained popularity with notable performances at Midpoint Music Festival, Woodward Theater and as a WNKU local discovery. The band is set to release an LP which will include updated versions of Beach Monster favorites and a few new songs as well. Geo Esquivel, lead singer of Modern Aquatic, gave me some insight into the first single “Edgar Allen Poe Was a Hardcore Dancer”.
“Edgar Allen Poe Was a Hardcore Dancer is a song that I wrote last year. It sort of just fell together. It started with a riff, the “main” riff you hear throughout the song. Everything else fell into place after that. I was listening to a lot of different music at the time ranging from Real Estate and Alvvays, all the way to DIIV. After sitting down for a bit while watching The X-Files, per usual, I finally was able to come up with something I really liked. The name was one that I had been trying to use since 7th grade. It wasn’t until we were jamming the instrumentals out that the lyrics came out, very naturally and unplanned. Since then it just made so much sense, for once, to use this song title. The song turned out to be about life and death and about not being sure if I was doing the things that I wanted to be doing/ living life the way i want to and what it means to do so.”
Modern Aquatic will be headlining MOTR Pub April 15th, 2017 with Coastal Club previously known as Local Waves. RSVP here!
